Ind vs Sa, 2nd Test: Preview

Match Previews

A rather exciting game was it wasn’t it, a double ton from Mayank twin tons by Rohit & 5 fees from R.Ashwin & Shami in respective innings made each & everyone full of joy. Nobody expected it to be along game as it was everybody thought it to be a 3-days affair max but visitors & especially Elgar and De Kock made it interesting with their respective tons but Rabada was a disappointing with the ball. While comparing both the teams India still has a upper-hand in all departments especially the two concerns for India i.e. issues with openers & Bumrah-less bowling department have been resolved but a tricky surface in Pune can push South Africa’s case. So, quoting anything about the pitch will certainly be sin I guess as the first or we can say the last Test match played here was rather annoying & hopeless for India than the visiting Australians, the funny faces of Ishant & Smith were the highlights of the game & a big loss to the home team too was a big highlight. Whereas the South Africans have never played here before in any format, so expect it to be a whole new different thing for acclimatising to the conditions. Expect another cracker-jacker of a game in this World Test Championship encounter.

The nine top-ranked Test teams are each required to play six bilateral Test series against mutually chosen opponents throughout the Championship cycle. Three of those six series will be played at home and three are to be played while touring. The tournament will not exactly progress in a round-robin format as each side will face only six of the eight teams. Further, each series can have anywhere between two to five tests but the points on offer from each Test series will be the same i.e. 120. The points will be awarded, not for the result of the Test series but the result obtained in each test match.

So if it’s a two-match Test series, a win in the first test will be worth 60 points (50% of 120). If it’s a three-match series, a win will be worth 40 points (1/3rd of 120). In a four-match Test series, a win will be worth 30 points (1/4rth of 120) and so on. In the event of a tie or no result, both teams will gain 30 points or half of the points for a win i.e. 60 in a two-match Test series. In the event of a draw, both teams will obtain 20 points (1/3rd of 60). A team will get no points if it loses the match. The points system is further explained in the table below.

Pitch- The match will be played at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. Quoting anything about the pitch will certainly be sin I guess as the first or we can say the last Test match played here was rather annoying & hopeless for India. The pitch is likely to favour spinners from the Day 1 as it did last time but in a rather slow fashion this time but expect some swing & seam for pacers upfront. So, winning the toss becomes more crucial. Also, rain is expected throughout the match.

South Africa – After a rather disappointing start & question marks over Du Plessis Captaincy plus the decision to play 3 spinners too back-fired. But Elgar & De Kock hitting tons was the only positive. So, expect Ngidi back in the XI for the next Test as the Visiting Captain said himself during post match press conference.

Playing XI- A.Markram, Dean Elgar, Faf Du Plessis(C), Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton De Kock(Wk), Dane Piedt, Lungi Ngidi, V.Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada

India What a game it has been India finally found to reliable openers plus the team also proved that they have a strong bowling irrespective of whether Bumrah plays or not. Pujara too got back into groove & a solid 8 in a match by Ashwin proved he is a lion at home while Shami & Jadeja kept their 2nd innings record intact. Pant isn’t the preferred option for this series & not will be in the future.

Playing XI- Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, C.Pujara, Virat Kohli(C), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, W.Saha(Wk), R.Ashwin, R.Jadeja, M.Shami, Ishant Sharma
